BIKER NEWS: ‘Furry bikers’ ride in to help with pet run

BN- Pet-loving bikers descended on animal sanctuaries to donate truck loads of food to help their furry friends through the winter.

About 80 motorbikes visited Cleadon Kennels, Brysons Animal Refuge, in Gateshead, and Tender Care Cattery, in Durham, as part of their “pet run” on September 20.

Vice-chairman of motor cycle club Dragonslayer MCC, Trevor Robinson, 58, from Sunderland, said: “We had two massive van loads of dog and cat food and more than 80 individuals – including 30 members from the club.

“Cleadon Kennels were over the moon – they couldn’t believe how many of us turned up.

“They even had snacks on for us – we didn’t ask – it was just their way of showing appreciation.

“We did it just to help out as part of our charity work.”

Dragonslayer MCC were joined by other motorbike groups in the area, including Gypsy Rebels MCC from Houghton, Votadini MCC from North Tyneside and Twisted Sprockets MCC from Heworth – who collected donations from supermarkets and other biking communities to provide the food.

Mr Robinson said many riders had pets themselves or were animal lovers, which meant the kennels were a cause close to their hearts.

“We were gobsmacked at the public response we had which was overwhelming when it came to donations,” Mr Robinson said. “It’s going to be an annual event.

“After we had finished the club had a barbecue back at Whitehills Pub in Chester-Le-Street, where we meet to say thank you to everybody for helping.”
