BIKER NEWS: Church holds a service for bikers

BN- New Providence Baptist Church will hold its fifth annual Biker Sunday at Muddy Run Pavilion beginning with a service and a meal at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. A freewill offering will be received.

For the very first time, the Rev. Ron Rush, who came up with the idea for the motorcycle ride, will join the ride, which will begin about 1 p.m. He just recently received a motorcycle learner's permit, and friend has loaned him a bike.

“I'll see if I stick with it," Rush said. "I may buy it from him. But first, I have to go through the wife. "

Rush, who has been New Providence's pastor since 2006, will begin the service by riding a motorcycle down the aisle in the make-shift sanctuary in the pavilion.

A couple of times, Rush was pushed on a bike down the aisle of the church, at 2411 Beaver Valley Pike, Quarryville —one year, riding on the back.

"That was a big joke — two guys on a bike," said Rush.

The pastor got the idea for the ride while driving to church from Red Lion on Sunday mornings and noticing a lot of bikers on routes 74 and 371.

“I thought to myself, 'Why isn't someone doing something to reach them,' " said Rush. "Mainly, the idea for the ride came out of a burden from the Lord on my heart to reach out to them with the gospel and the love of God. Bikers do have a bad 'rep' sometimes."

Six bikers rode in the first ride; about 40, the next year. This year, Rush expects about 75, including 25 from the congregation, three or four of whom were bikers on previous rides and then joined the church.

“We are just a church trying to live like Jesus taught us to live for his kingdom of God," Rush said, "and trying to reach out to the community God's put us in."
