BIKER NEWS: Qld should toughen bikie laws: Dutton

BN- The Queensland government is reluctant to crack down on outlaw bikies because they have infiltrated Labor-affiliated unions, federal Liberal frontbencher Peter Dutton has suggested.

Appearing on the Gold Coast on Thursday, the Brisbane-based immigration minister was asked about the effectiveness of the anti-bikie laws introduced by the former Liberal National government, given they were yet to result in a successful conviction.

He called on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to amend or strengthen the laws if she thought they weren't effective.

But Mr Dutton suggested Labor's union links were the reasons why the premier didn't want to do anything.

"If she's not prepared to act, she should stand up in front of the TV cameras and explain to Queenslanders why she won't put their interests ahead of the CFMEU and the outlaw motorcycle gang members that have now infiltrated these key unions here in Queensland," Mr Dutton said.

The Palaszczuk government is currently reviewing the laws.

The Liberal Nationals have always argued that the laws acted as a deterrent against bikies, so shouldn't necessarily be judged on the number of prosecutions.
