BIKER NEWS: ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Creator Kurt Sutter Talks Prequel, Spinoff Possibilities And His Relationship With Charlie Hunnam
BN- Is there a possible reunion in the works between Charlie Hunnam and Kurt Sutter? As Sutter’s newest series, The Bastard Executioner, continues to air its first season on FX, the Sons of Anarchy creator sat down with Deadline and discussed the possibility of working with Hunnam and a new prequel to Sons.
In regards to a prequel to the hit biker drama, Sutter revealed that such a series would likely focus on the founding of the original motorcycle club.
“At some point I do have plans to hopefully do the prequel, which I do see as a one-off 10- or 12-episode thing where we begin in Nam and see John Teller and Piney and see how that relationship got created, and bring them back to the States and the obvious external dynamics that were going on with the country and the perception of the war and what an odd kind of perception these vets got when they returned home,” Sutter explained. “And then have it be the development of the club, ending before we start to get too close to some of the mythology that’s already been established.”
Sutter added that he was also open to doing a Sons of Anarchy spinoff series that would focus on the Mayans, though he admitted that it would not have anything to do with the mythology he has already created with Sons.
“I’d be open to doing something with the Mayans. It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand. I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told.”
Although any new series within the SOA world would likely not include Hunnam’s character, Jax Teller, Sutter was open to the idea of working with Hunnam in future. In fact, Sutter revealed that things went so well with Hunnam and the ending of Sons that by its end, he felt a close bond with his leading star.
“I love my cast. One of the cool things about being out in London is, I got to hang with Charlie Hunnam a lot,” he stated, referencing filming for The Bastard Executioner. “I was staying on Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia. Charlie was in the next neighborhood, but Guy Ritchie lived in Fitzrovia so maybe once a week, I would just see Charlie go by on his bicycle. We would stop and bulls**t.”
After sharing a story about his wife, Katey Sagal visiting with Hunnam and how they “hung out for an hour or so” in what was a “lovely infusion of family,” Sutter admitted that working with Hunnam on a future project is something he would greatly enjoy.
“I just really felt how lucky I was and how rare that is to have built those relationships along the way. I love Charlie, man. We can’t wait until we have an opportunity to work together again,” he stated. “I think he had a blast on King Arthur and there’s part of me that’s grateful I didn’t completely crush his soul by the end of our show. He’s actually in a better place than when he started. I love all those guys.”
Although this future project might not have anything to do with Sons of Anarchy, Sutter’s newest show The Bastard Executioner would offer a potential spot for a cameo appearance by Hunnam. After all, Hunnam is now familiar with swinging a sword for his role in Ritchie’s Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, which would make him a perfect fit for Sutter’s medieval drama.
Charlie Hunnam is currently in Belfast filming The Lost City of Z with Twilight star Robert Pattinson. Kurt Sutter’s The Bastard Executioner airs Tuesday nights on FX.
