BIKER NEWS: Perth bikie gang leader deported to NZ

BN- A Perth bikie gang leader faces deportation to his native New Zealand after Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton revoked his visa on character grounds.

The West Australian reports that Joel Royston Makaea, 34, the sergeant-at-arms of the Rebels chapter in the Perth suburb of Bentley, was arrested and taken into immigration detention on Monday.

The newspaper says his deportation is part of the Australian government crackdown on members of outlaw bikie gangs since the Migration Act was changed in December.

In June Rebels national president Alex Vella had his visa cancelled while visiting his native Malta and former Tasmanian Rebels leader AJ Graham was put in prison pending his deportation to New Zealand where he was born.

After previous instances of Kiwi criminals being deported home without any notice to New Zealand government agencies, a register of deportees from Australia was set up in July so authorities can keep tabs on them.

The government is also working to develop a law that supervises deported offenders.
