BIKER NEWS: Local bikie gangs are gone, say police

BN- BIKIE gangs are a "non-issue" on the Fraser Coast according to current acting head of the Hervey Bay Criminal Investigation Branch.

"They have not even really been active since the law went through and they handed in their colours," Acting Detective Senior Sergeant David Guild of Hervey Bay police said.

Det Snr Sgt Guild said police had not seen any bikie-related activities in the region.

"It is something that we are still monitoring," he said.

Det Snr Sgt Guild said police believed a majority of former bikie gang members had moved away from the region.

The clubhouse of the Hervey Bay chapter of the Rebels Motorcycle Club was gutted by fire in March 2013.

Police at the time claimed the club had been disbanded.

But in a show of defiance, members in May 2013 rode along the Esplanade wearing their colours on a Saturday. Police, who had previously denied their existence in Hervey Bay, said at the time the bikies were "very polite" during the rally.

In June 2013, the club claimed to still have members "riding" in the Fraser Coast region despite police claims the club was no longer active in the area.
